This beautiful iced gingerbread, or turtă dulce, is handcrafted by Varga Mezes in Harghita County, Transylvania, a region famed for its long-standing gingerbread making tradition. Baked in a wood fired oven and glazed by hand, it features a delicate image of two traditional haystacks, and endearing symbol of the autumn harvest and rural life in the Carpathian mountains.
Made from a classic dough sweetened with honey and gently spiced with cloves and cinnamon, each biscuit is soft, fragrant and full of comforting flavour. In Romania, turtă dulce is a beloved childhood treat, often enjoyed during festive seasons such as Christmas and Easter.
